Meet Ellie

I decided to bring back this blog because I need somewhere to record the daily happenings of our lives. If it weren't for the posts here, I would never have been able to fill out Timmy's baby book. And what better time to start back up again than now, with a new baby?

Meet Ellen Lucille "Ellie" Ottomanelli

Born 9/19/2011 at 12:36am
8 lbs, 5 oz 19.5 in long

The Name:
Ellen is named after my grandmother that passed away almost two years ago. It is also my mom's middle name, my middle name and my aunt's (on my dad's side) middle name. Lucille...just because we liked it.

The Baby:
She looks like a miniature, more feminine version of Timmy. Same basic face, apple chin and chubby cheeks. Ellie has blondish hair and less of the barrel chest that Timmy had, but otherwise she looks very familiar. She is sweet and cuddly, already proving to be an excellent eater and snuggler.

The Labor & Delivery:

Saturday night I started having contractions around 8pm. They were pretty mild and only about every 15 minutes apart and stopped around 10pm. They woke me up again at 2am and were slightly more painful, but still not consistent and not progressing or getting closer together. Around 5:30am Sunday morning they stopped completely and I was tired and pissed that all that had led to nothing except a lack of sleep. Sunday I was grumpy (and contraction-free) all day. After accepting the fact that I could have several more nights like that before it turned into the real thing, contractions started at 7pm or so Sunday night. Still 15-20 minutes apart, but they quickly got more painful. Because of the abrupt end of contractions the night before, I was hesitant to call my mom and tell her to drive an hour up here to stay with Timmy. By 9:15 they were so painful that I knew even if they never got closer together they must be making me progress enough to be admitted at Labor & Delivery. I called my mom and calmly packed up the last few things I wanted to take to the hospital while Pete cleaned up and left notes for my mom on taking care of Timmy on Monday. She hit traffic on the way up to our place (seriously, 10pm on a Sunday night...only the 405 would have traffic), so as soon as she arrived at 10:40pm, we headed out the door.

Contractions were really painful at this point, but still only 8 minutes apart or so. I mentally prepared to be sent home. We got to the hospital right around 11pm and when I was finally checked at 11:30, I was already 6 cm dilated. Considering I was admitted at 2-3 when I had Timmy, this was crazy. I was begging for an epidural, but they had to get the requisite amount of fluid in via IV first. I think they finally got the epidural started around 12:15 am, at which point the nurses checked me and said I was already 10 cm and fully effaced. We waited for the doctor to arrive and when she did, the baby was out in two quick pushes. She was placed on my chest and we enjoyed skin-to-skin contact and nursing for almost an hour once she was cleaned up.

The Recovery:

I'm honestly blown away at how easy it has been this time around. As I sat in the hospital bed on Monday, I kept waiting for the epidural to wear off and start feeling pain. It never happened. I asked my nurse if it was possible that the epidural was still effective (like 16 hours after I delivered) and she laughed as she said no. We came home Tuesday afternoon and adjusting to life at home with two kids has been pretty smooth.

The Big Brother:

Timmy ADORES his baby sister. He bounded into the hospital room Monday morning shouting "LOOK AT THE BABY! THAT'S MY BABY!" and then asked to hold her, saying he wanted to give her a big hug and kiss (which he proceeded to do). Tuesday when he came home from daycare, I could hear him walking up the stairs saying "baby Ellie, where are you?!" He has shown nothing but affection (and concern if she's crying) so far and my heart melts every time I see the way he looks at her.

Eighteen Months

Timmy,
You are one and a half today and a completely delightful, funny and sweet little boy (most of the time). With every passing day you start looking more like a toddler (and your dad) and less like a baby.

18 month stats:
Height: 33.5 inches (75th percentile)
Weight: 30 lbs, 7 oz (93rd percentile)
Head Circumference: 20 inches (>95th percentile)

You're a big, bulky guy and everyone comments that you are going to be a football player (we'll see about that when you're older...). I bought you new shoes yesterday and just about fainted when the lady brought out size 7 wide shoes. You're like a German Shepherd puppy; you still need to grow into your feet (and your head).

A bunch of new teeth are invading your mouth. You have 7 in front and 4 molars. Your hair is getting lighter, thick and wavy, needing frequent haircuts, which I still do at home. Your eyes are a bluish/greenish/gray color, depending on the light and what you're wearing, though I have a feeling they may still change.

You are almost as stubborn as your mama, and want to do everything by yourself. I don't even bother trying to feed you anymore. And you do just fine anyway, using forks and spoons really well.

You're turning into a very active boy, running, climbing, bouncing and dancing. There is probably nothing that gets you more excited than the sight of trucks or cranes or anything remotely related to construction work. Every time you see an airplane or the moon in the sky, you point up, shriek with excitement and tell me what you see. Now you like boats and trains too. That's not to say you only like "boy" toys. At the park, you jump on the chance to push around a little stroller with a baby doll in it.

Without a doubt, your favorite activity is reading books. There are easily 100 books in your collection and I honestly can't say which is your favorite; we read them all, and some we read multiple times a day. Sometimes you'll sit in front of the bookshelves, pulling them off one at a time, flipping through the pages, pointing to things we talk about and babbling something incomprehensible. The end result is a pile that completely buries you. Other times, you'll bring them one at a time to me, shouting "Book! Book!" and plop in my lap.

A few times a week, I let you watch a TV show while I cook dinner. As soon as the word "Backyardigans" comes out of my mouth, you smile and sprint to your little chair, get comfortable and wait for your little singing and dancing friends to appear on the screen. Then you'll watch, completely entranced, for the entire 30 minutes, laughing at all the right times. It's adorable.

You love animals, especially dogs, but recently you've rediscovered our cats and find the things they do hilarious. George crawls into a bag...hilarious! Sweet Pea runs away from you...hilarious! You also love flirting with the ladies, and when you really want to impress them, you flash your belly button and grin.

There is so much more I could say about you at this age, but I'm not sure it's possible to put it all into words. Just know that your parents (and grandparents/aunts/uncles/friends) love spending time with you and watching you become your own little self.

Love,
Mama

Timmy on the loose

Timmy decided he was ready to walk last week after a long period of timidly taking steps then dropping to his knees or walking holding on to our finger. It's so fun for all of us...here he is at the park today:

Taco Tuesday

I think everyone who actually reads this blog (if anyone does anymore) already knows, but Pete has taken a new job and will start April 12th. That means he is winding up his current job and he is taking advantage of having a little bit less pressure on him while he can. He got home early last night at 6, in time to have dinner with Timmy and give him a bath. We all enjoyed some fish tacos and it was SO NICE to have a little family dinner (that never happens during the week).

Pete snapped a few photos of Timmy, and I noticed that this week he has really started posing for pictures. He smiles so much his eyes squint and his teeth poke through. I love it. It will be a great time in our lives when we are able to enjoy family dinners regularly, but until then, I am soaking up every wonderful minute of it!

Silly Tired

At night just before Timmy's bed time, he gets super super silly. Sometimes Daddy is lucky enough to make it home from work to enjoy
